How to Keep Your Teeth Healthy During Orthodontic Treatment

Getting braces or aligners is an exciting step toward a straighter, more confident smile. But while orthodontic treatment improves the alignment and appearance of your teeth, it also requires extra care to keep your mouth healthy. Brackets, wires, and aligner trays can trap food and make brushing more challenging — increasing the risk of plaque build-up, decay, and gum problems.

With the right routine and support from your dental team, you can protect your teeth and gums throughout treatment and ensure your new smile is as healthy as it is beautiful.

1. Brush Thoroughly (and More Often)

If you wear braces, food particles and plaque can easily accumulate around brackets and wires. It’s important to brush after every meal and snack, not just morning and night. Use a soft-bristled or orthodontic toothbrush designed to reach around brackets, and angle the bristles under the wires.

For aligner users (like Invisalign®), remove your trays before eating and brush before putting them back in. This prevents trapping bacteria and food residue between the trays and teeth.

2. Flossing Is Still Essential

Flossing can be tricky with braces, but it’s crucial for preventing gum inflammation and decay between teeth. Tools such as floss threaders, interdental brushes, or water flossers can make the job much easier.

If you’re using clear aligners, floss at least once daily before bed to remove plaque from between your teeth — even if your teeth look clean after brushing.

3. Choose Tooth-Friendly Foods

Some foods can damage braces or stick in hard-to-clean areas. Avoid:

  • Hard foods (like nuts, popcorn, or ice) that can bend wires or loosen brackets
  • Sticky lollies or chewy toffees that cling to metal parts
  • Sugary drinks and sodas that increase the risk of enamel damage

Instead, choose soft, nutrient-rich foods such as yoghurt, soups, steamed vegetables, and fresh fruit. In New Zealand’s warm months, smoothies are a great braces-friendly way to enjoy fruit without risking damage.

4. Stay on Top of Dental Visits

While your orthodontist manages tooth movement, your general dentist still plays an essential role in your oral health. Regular check-ups and professional cleans help remove plaque and tartar from areas you can’t reach and catch issues early — like early decay or gum irritation.

At Howick Dental Surgery, we work closely with orthodontic patients to ensure their teeth and gums stay healthy throughout treatment.

5. Protect Your Teeth During Sports

If you play rugby, netball, or other contact sports, wearing a custom-fitted mouthguard is crucial. Standard boil-and-bite guards often don’t fit well over braces and can cause injury. Your dentist can make a mouthguard tailored to your current treatment stage.

6. Watch for White Spots and Sensitivity

White, chalky patches that appear after braces are removed are early signs of enamel demineralisation — often caused by plaque left behind. Using a fluoride mouthwash or tooth mousse recommended by your dentist can help strengthen enamel and prevent permanent marks.

Orthodontic treatment is an investment in your confidence and long-term oral health. By maintaining a diligent care routine, eating smart, and staying connected with your dental team, you can ensure your teeth remain strong and spotless throughout the process.
